Androscoggin County

Located along the Androscoggin River, Lewiston/Auburn is a gateway to Maine’s lakes and mountains region, with scenic beaches and picturesque coastal villages less than an hour away. Long ago, the Great Falls on the river powered the twin cities’ economy, an economy based on huge fabric mills and many shoe factories. A self-guided historic walking tour is available.

Lewiston-Auburn boasts an ever growing cultural arts community. John Muir Publications named L–A one of the Best Small Arts Communities in the Country, as the number and diversity of offerings is staggering for a community of this size. As the area’s slogan L–A: It's Happening Here! implies, there are numerous arts and entertainment options in the area.

The editors of Downeast Magazine were fascinated to discover so much natural beauty in L–A. Few people realize you can be in the second largest community in Maine, yet still get the quintessential Maine experience, from biking and walking along the Androscoggin River to enjoying the tranquil surroundings of a nature preserve.

Today, a diversified business base features renovated mills, shopping facilities and restaurants. Summer’s biggest events are the Great Falls Balloon Festival, Liberty Festival, Moxie Festival, and Festival Franco Fun.

• The Riverwalk meanders along the Androscoggin River providing beautiful views of the Twin Cities, gardens, and outdoor art. Benches dot the route.
• Hike in Thorncrag Bird Sanctuary home to the Stanton Bird Club and a number of walking, hiking, and cross country ski paths.
• Sts. Peter and Paul Basilica is a must-see. Visit this architectural wonder. Call the rectory at (207) 777-1200 to find out if it’s possible to get a peek inside.
• Visit Museum L–A’s collection of textile and industrial equipment, photos, and other paraphernalia. One of the country’s premiere textile mills, the Bates Mill operated for decades and played a critical role in the area’s history.
• See a MAINEiacs hockey game—the only U.S. franchise of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.
